Getting Started with Self-Tanning
Self-tanning products use an ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to gradually create a golden-brown colour. Unlike tanning in the sun, this process doesn't require UV exposure, making it a great alternative for achieving a bronzed appearance.
Our tanning mousses are formulated with a hydrating coconut water base, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and nourishing botanical ingredients. Designed to absorb quickly and deliver natural-looking colour, our formulas combine self-tanning with skincare benefits for a glow that looks and feels beautiful.
Absolutely! Our range is designed for everyone, from first-time tanners to experienced glow lovers. If you're new to self-tanning, we recommend starting with Ultra Glow for a soft, natural-looking result and using our Velvety Tanning Mitt for smooth, even application.
Each summerbrons. mousse is designed to create a different depth of bronze.
- Ultra Glow: A light-to-medium golden glow, ideal for fairer skin tones, beginners or anyone wanting a subtle finish.
- Ultra Tan: Our signature medium-to-deep bronze, ideal for a classic sun-kissed look.
- Ultra Dark: A deeper, richer bronze for those who love a more intense tan.
Green-based tanning guide colours help visually balance redness, while violet-based guide colours help counteract overly warm or orange tones. Ultra Glow and Ultra Tan feature green-based guide colours, while Ultra Dark uses a violet base. The guide colour rinses away, leaving the developed DHA tan behind.
Ingredients & How Self-Tan Works
DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, the active tanning ingredient responsible for creating a sunless tan. It's a colourless sugar that reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to produce temporary brown pigments called melanoidins, giving your skin a naturally bronzed appearance.
summerbrons. uses naturally derived DHA sourced from sugarcane. This plant-derived ingredient is the foundation of our tanning formulas, allowing you to develop a golden glow without UV exposure.
DHA is a widely used cosmetic tanning ingredient and is generally considered safe when applied to intact skin as directed. It works primarily in the outermost layer of the skin rather than creating a UV-induced tan. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and avoid inhaling tanning mists.
Our three tanning mousses have different DHA concentrations to help you choose your ideal depth of colour.

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that helps attract and retain moisture in the skin. We include it in our Glow Drops and Glow Mist formulas to support hydration and leave skin feeling smoother, softer and more supple.
Coconut water forms the base of our tanning mousses, contributing to their lightweight, refreshing feel. Combined with moisturising ingredients, it helps create a comfortable formula that spreads easily and leaves skin feeling hydrated.
Our tanning formulas feature ingredients selected for their skincare benefits, including:
- Vitamin C: An antioxidant that helps support brighter, more radiant-looking skin.
- Vitamin E: Helps condition the skin and provides antioxidant benefits.
- Coconut oil: Helps soften and nourish dry skin.
- Rosehip oil: Rich in fatty acids that help support skin conditioning.
- Avocado oil: Helps replenish moisture and keep skin feeling supple.
- Cucumber extract: Known for its soothing and refreshing properties.
- Shea butter: Helps soften skin and support moisture retention in formulas where included.
Preparing Your Skin
For the smoothest, most even result, exfoliate and moisturise approximately 24 hours before applying your tan. Pay particular attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees and ankles. On tanning day, make sure your skin is clean and completely dry, without makeup, deodorant, perfume or heavy moisturisers.
We recommend shaving or waxing at least 48 hours before applying your tan. This gives your skin time to settle and helps reduce the likelihood of dark dots appearing around hair follicles.
Moisturise your skin the day before tanning, but avoid applying moisturiser all over your body immediately before application. A small amount on particularly dry areas, such as elbows, knees and ankles, can help prevent excess colour absorption.
Applying Your Tan & Colour Development
Apply your chosen mousse to clean, dry, exfoliated skin using our Velvety Tanning Mitt. Work in sections, blending with sweeping and circular motions for even coverage. Use less product on elbows, knees, hands and ankles. Allow the mousse to dry before dressing.
A little goes a long way! Our tanning guidance recommends approximately 15ml for a full-body application, depending on your body size and desired coverage. Applying too much can lead to uneven colour, so start with a moderate amount and blend thoroughly.
For a softer, natural-looking tan, rinse after approximately 3–4 hours. For a deeper bronze, leave the mousse on for 6–8 hours or longer, according to the product directions. Your colour will continue to develop after your first rinse.
Rinse with lukewarm water only, avoiding soap, body wash, exfoliants and scrubs. You may notice the initial guide colour washing away, which is completely normal. Gently pat your skin dry rather than rubbing with a towel.
The immediate colour you see after application is partly a temporary guide colour that helps you see where you've applied the mousse. This rinses away during your first shower, while the DHA-developed colour remains and continues to deepen over the following hours.
Our tanning mousse can be used on the face with care, but if you prefer a more gradual, skincare-focused option, our Glow Drops are a great alternative. Avoid the eye area, lips and irritated skin, and always follow the product directions.
DHA begins developing colour within approximately 2–4 hours, with the final result continuing to deepen over 24–48 hours. We recommend allowing your tan to fully develop before deciding whether you'd like another layer.
Maintaining Your Tan & Troubleshooting
Dry skin can absorb tanning ingredients unevenly, creating darker patches around elbows, knees, ankles and other areas. Gentle exfoliation, regular moisturising and applying less mousse to these areas can help achieve a more consistent finish.
Your summerbrons. tan will typically last around 5–7 days, depending on your skin type, preparation and aftercare. Keeping your skin moisturised and avoiding excessive exfoliation will help maintain an even, longer-lasting glow.
The secret to a longer-lasting tan is hydrated, well-prepared skin. Exfoliate before tanning, moisturise daily after your first rinse, avoid harsh scrubs and pat your skin dry after showering. Our Glow Mist can also help maintain a fresh, radiant complexion between tanning applications.
Most people refresh their tan approximately once a week, depending on how quickly it fades. For the best result, gently remove any uneven or remaining colour before applying a fresh layer.
Yes, once your tan has fully developed and you've completed your first rinse. However, frequent swimming, chlorine and prolonged water exposure can cause your tan to fade more quickly. Rinse your skin after swimming and moisturise to help maintain your colour.
Sweating during the initial development period can interfere with an even finish, so it's best to avoid strenuous exercise until after your first rinse. Once developed, you can return to your usual activities, although frequent sweating and friction may cause faster fading.
Glow Drops & Glow Mist
Our Glow Drops combine gradual self-tanning with hydrating skincare ingredients to give your complexion a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow. Formulated with DHA, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and rosehip oil, they're a simple way to add subtle warmth to your skincare routine.
Mix a few drops with your favourite facial moisturiser and apply evenly to clean skin, following the directions on the bottle. Blend carefully around your hairline and jaw, and wash your hands afterwards. Start with a small amount and build your colour gradually.
Glow Drops are designed for a buildable, gradual tanning effect. Adjust how frequently you apply them according to your desired colour and how your skin responds. Once you've achieved your ideal glow, use them as needed to maintain it.
Glow Mist is a lightweight, bi-phase gradual tanning mist designed to hydrate skin while building a fresh, natural-looking glow. Featuring native New Zealand botanicals, Kakadu plum and vitamin B5, it's ideal for enhancing your complexion or topping up your existing tan.
A bi-phase formula contains two phases that are designed to be mixed before use. Shake your Glow Mist thoroughly before each application to combine the formula and ensure an even application.
Shake well before use. If your bottle produces a fine mist, spray evenly over the face or body, keeping your eyes and mouth closed. If it dispenses a more concentrated spray, apply the product to your hands first and smooth it over your skin like a serum. Wash your hands after application and avoid inhaling the mist.
Yes! Glow Mist is designed for both face and body, making it a versatile addition to your tanning routine. Use it to build gradual colour or refresh your glow between full-body tanning applications.
Glow Drops are ideal for incorporating gradual tanning into your facial moisturising routine, giving you control over the amount you use. Glow Mist offers a convenient, lightweight application for both face and body, with a refreshing, hydrating finish.
Tanning Tools, Finishing Products & Tan Removal
Summerset Drying Powder is designed to help set your freshly applied self-tan and reduce that sticky, tacky feeling. It's especially useful around elbows, behind knees and underarms, helping you feel more comfortable while your tan develops.
No. Summerset Drying Powder isn't a self-tanner and doesn't contain the tanning agents responsible for developing your colour. Its purpose is to help your freshly applied tan feel dry and comfortable.
After applying your tanning mousse, use the summerbrons. Tan Perfecting Brush to lightly dust powder over areas prone to stickiness or creasing. Focus on underarms, behind knees, inner elbows and other areas where skin comes into contact with skin.
Both brushes are designed to help you achieve a polished tanning finish. The Kabuki Brush is useful for precise blending around hands, feet, knees and other smaller areas, while the Body Brush is suited to broader areas and applying finishing products evenly.
A tanning mitt helps distribute mousse smoothly and evenly while protecting your palms from staining. It's one of the easiest ways to achieve a professional-looking, streak-free finish at home.
Our Self-Tan Back Mitt is designed to make reaching difficult areas easier. Apply your mousse to the mitt and use gentle, controlled movements to spread the product evenly across your back.
Use summerbrons. Tan Eraser to help loosen and remove existing tan, then gently exfoliate to lift any remaining colour. Focus on areas where product tends to build up, such as elbows, knees and ankles. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can irritate your skin.
Both products help prepare your skin for your next tan. Tan Eraser is designed to assist with removing existing tanning colour, while the Tan Remover Bar offers a convenient cleansing and exfoliating option to help lift remaining product and refresh your skin.
For best results, we recommend removing your previous tan and preparing your skin approximately 24 hours before applying fresh mousse. This gives your skin time to settle and helps create a smoother base.
Skin Sensitivity, Safety & Skincare
summerbrons. tanning formulas include hydrating and conditioning ingredients selected with skin comfort in mind. However, everyone's skin is different and we recommend patch testing before use, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin.
One of the reasons Summer created summerbrons. was her own experience with eczema and the irritation caused by traditional self-tanning products. With sensitive skin in mind, our tanning mousses are formulated with a hydrating coconut water base and naturally derived ingredients wherever possible, helping to nourish and moisturise the skin while delivering a beautiful, sun-kissed glow.
While our formulas are designed with skin comfort in mind, everyone's skin is different. If you have eczema, psoriasis or particularly sensitive skin, we recommend patch testing first and avoiding application to irritated or broken skin.
Topical DHA self-tanning products are generally considered a lower-UV-risk alternative to sunbathing, but pregnancy and breastfeeding can change skin sensitivity. We recommend checking with your healthcare professional before use, avoiding inhalation of tanning mists and keeping products away from the breast area when breastfeeding.
No. Self-tanning products create colour without providing meaningful UV protection. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 or higher when outdoors.
In most cases, yes. However, exfoliating acids, retinoids and other resurfacing products can increase skin cell turnover and cause your tan to fade more quickly. Adjust your skincare routine as needed and avoid combining products that irritate your skin.
Stop using the product immediately and gently rinse it from your skin. If irritation persists, seek medical advice. Always patch test new cosmetic products before applying them to larger areas.
